::NEWS::
Seasonal flu shots are available right now. South Dakota received its first allocation of H1N1 vaccine on 10/01/09, 5,000 doses of flu mist vaccine. The Department of Health is now shipping the vaccine to hospitals across the state on a pro-rata basis to begin vaccinating health care workers who deliver direct patient care. The department expects to order an additional 5,000 - 8,000 doses this week and approximately 40,000 doses the following. These allocations should include both flu mist and injectable vaccine and will be targeted to both high risk patients and the remainder of the health care workforce. Increasing quantities of vaccine are expected to be available in the state on a weekly basis. As more vaccine becomes available it will be administered beyond the priority groups.

“It is my greatest hope and prayer that all of these precautions and preparations prove unnecessary....I would sooner take action now than hesitate and face graver consequences later."
